Hello from Sunny Devon

Hi all, I bought my self a Young's Brew Buddy Cider Kit last week, it is my first homebrew attempt. Since I got my kit on the go I have allready learnt so much. I didnt take a hydro reading before I left it to do its magic but really wish I had I want to transfer it to my pressure barrel asap as Im having a party in two weeks time so it needs to be ready for then It has been fermenting in my airing cupbord 6 days which is what it says on the instructions (well 4-6 days) but my hydrometer reading isnt in the green its just under can someone please explain why

Hi Damo - welcome to the forum. :

First off it would be useful to know the gravity reading of you beer? It is this that dictates when you can transfer to a keg. The instructions on your tin are designed to reel you in and think that your beer will be ready very quickly - they very rarely are.

1000 is a bit low. You would normally expect it to finish in the 1008-1014 range.

With regards to if it is ready it probably is. I would take another reading today and tomorrow to see if it is constant. Then you need to put it some where cool to clear and then keg it. However Cider usually takes a while for its flavour to really develop(especially since you are from Devon) it does really need a few months. It will be drinkable but will be better in a few months.

Whoops - I skimmed over that bit.

I would go with Grays recommendations. As he says - it will be drinkable but if you are hoping to drink it fairly soon then you won't taste it at its best.

Ok a quick update, checked it when I got home, and it was the same 1.000. Took it out the airing cupboard, and put her in the bathroom. Sterilised all my bits and bobs, which took a good hour, had me tea and put her in the keg. After reading these comments me thinks maybee I Should have left her a bit longer. Added my sugar and poped her back in the cupboard.

Im going to get another batch on this weekend, my plan is to have it ready when this one runs out. I know the longer the better, but Im really enjoying the learning curve.

I did have a little taste of my cider tonight and it is better than I thought it would be so Im sure it will be fine for my party even if it is just a last resort
