Hello there,
Iâm new to Brew, big drinking fan tho! The old man brought me a North Camp lager kit for Crimbo along with a fermenting barrel, airlock valve, bung, sediment trap, and some syphon tubing. Heâs produced a few lovely tasting beers but is more of an ale drinker.
My Plan is to use Tesco Value bottled water as the tap water round here is a wee bit funky tasting, and at £1.90 for ten 2L bottles itâs hardly a great expense. I take it itâs ok to then re-use these bottles (post sterilise) for bottling the lager?
The one bit the kit doesnât explain at all is bottle conditioning of the beer, Am I right that to get a good lager bubble I need about 1tsp of sugar for each 500ml of beer, so 2 tsp for a 2ltr bottle?
I have been shopping, and got some steriliser, a bottle filling stick (at the old mans recommendation), hydrometer and test vessel and a big spoon!
So my three questions are â
Can I use the tesco bottles, or am I going to end up with lager all over the ceiling and an angry wife?
Is it about right to stick 2tsp of sugar into 2L for conditioning or will this give me a beery syrup for my porridge? (hmmmmm)
Should I go and buy special brewing sugar or use the stuff in the cupboard that the mrs uses for baking cakes? Whatâs the difference?
Thanks for your help in advanced, im getting stupidly excited about this now, my package of new toys has apparently arrived at home today ) !
