Hi everyone,

I'm a fan of British beers living near Dusseldorf. I found my love of Real Ale and the likes when studying for my PhD in Southampton, so I'm well aquainted with beers from the South. I took things a step further and am now almost exclusively brewing British beers back home in Germany. I'm also trying to get other homebrewers into British beers, giving advice in the main German forum and on social media.

I love liquid yeast and the character it brings. I have done my fair share of parti-gyling, the proper stuff with blending, mind you. And I love cloning beers and describing my methods on a youtube channel. One of the latest English videos I did was about Young's Winter Warmer.

Cheers,
Christoph

Welcome Christoph. I also studied in Southampton and I'd be interested to learn more about your experience there. So what beers did you like and which were your favourite pubs? Which beers are you brewing now you're home.
Regrettably, I haven't yet been to Dusseldorf, but I understand you have very hard water there.

"That's living alright!"

Hi, I was often at the Crown next to the campus. They had Ringwood Best Bitter on cask, which was my beer to go. I really liked it compared to the overly bitter industrial Pilsner we get here in Germany. Local Altbier is also ususally too bitter for me. UK Bitter Ale hits just the right spot when it comes to that. I now brew everything British, from Bitters and Milds over Porter and Stout to Burton Ale, IPA, Barley Wine, you name it.

I lived near the campus, so I did not often go into the city for the pubs. But I did love the New Forest pub in Ashurst and the Red Lion on the Isle of Wight.

Düsseldorf has incredibly hard water, London level, but the town outside where I leave has a bit more decent specs already. So it's not too difficult working with it.

I've never had a real altbier, but I've copied recipes twice and I didn't like either of them; not bitter, but too caramel for me. As the two recipes were very different, I doubt either of them were authentic. I've read about the rivalry between altbier brewers and kölsch brewers, which sounds like a bit of fun.
Just spent a week sampling the beers of French Flanders: some gems and some horrors. It's been some time since I had a proper German pilsner. I used to enjoy a pint of draught Warsteiner when I lived in England. Not had one for a while.
