Hi,

probably typical newbie question.. I got a starter brew kit for Xmas, Youngs Bitter, so I red a lot on here and followed lots of good instructions BUT

The guide said make the brew, loosely lay the FV lid on and leave to ferment for 2-3 days ( I'm thinking about 2 weeks more likely)

Now I've read if air can get in the brew could spoil which is why you use an airlock so: which is right? Having the lid loose not clipped down tight is my brew already ruined? It got a nice head on it and seems to be fermenting away but guessing it might taste like drain water now..

My kit didnt come with airlock so i brewed 17 kits with loose lid - All were great :thumb:

As long as you have the lid covering the bucket the positive pressure of the fermentation will push out the co2 and prevent o2 getting in.

Have a read of the how to's, very reassuring.

It should be fine, a lot of people always use an air lock, I never have and never list a beer as a result.

Thanks for that!

I read the basic how to guide on here before I started everything, I thought the ease and times on the kit instructions sounded a bit too easy/good to be true! Advice on this forum has been fantastic and I can't wait to see if the end result is any good..

The more I get into this the more I'm starting to think it's just as much about the brewing as it is about the end result :)
