It's tedious and boring. At the moment I'm using Ritchies steriliser and cleaner. What i don't know is how much rinsing out with cold water is sufficient. This is confusing for someone with no sense off smell. I sterilised my barrel today left it for 20 minutes or so giving the odd swirl then rinsed it out i filled it to the top with cold water swashed it around then filled it half way emptied it out again then filled it a third way up swirled it and emptied again hope that was enough.

Also i lost my instructions for my Geordie Yorks bitter and did not know how much to batch prime so i batched at 60grams for 23 litres. Anyone know if that's about right.

Oh nearly forgot. The gravity started at 1042 and it's been reading at 1012 for a week now[ been in fv for 17days] decided to barrel. i noticed if i looked real close when i took the lid off the f.v a slight like oily film on top of the brew. Had to look real close mind but have never noticed this before. Does brews always have this film on or was it more sinister. It tasted ok when i started the syphoning thou.

Having bad feelings about this brew. But there again i feel like this after every barrelling/bottling and it's usually fine

60 grams for a keg or bottle? should suffice for a keg, maybe a little under for a bottle...if in doubt in the future, add 1/2tsp per bottle worth.

I hated VWP too, my kit stays sanitary when not in use with sodium metabisulphate. you make up a few gallons in a bucket and all of my plastic stuff is just left in there, same with demi johns etc. all ready to go when i want to brew, most of it washed off and returned to the bucket after use. if you need to sanitize fast, just chuck something into the bucket and wait 15 minutes. it's great stuff, and despite people saying it's not technically a sanitizer, i've never had a problem...

failing that, invest in something like videne or starsan...it's really worthwhile and only a few quid more - think about the time and potentially the beer you'll save!

if it tastes fine, it's probably fine. maybe some residue in the bucket?

Good afternoon Rob.

Been looking at this Videne stuff just now. Never heard of it mind but if it doesn't need rinsing that would save loads of time.

60g fine then and hopefully residue in bucket :thumb:

Mind at rest.

Got the Geordie Yorks bitter because i have read good and bad reviews so thought i would see for myself.

Regards.

Make sure you get Videne antiseptic and not Videne solution.
The latter is used for washing cows udders at milking time.....

By the way if you are going to do home brewing ..... get to like sanitising....you'll be doing a lot of it.

Hated sanitising when i did home brew 20 odd years ago and still hate it now. Enjoy the end product thou. :D

Rob just been reading the back of my better brew Northern brown [ starting very soon] and it recommends 85g priming. Do you reckon the 60g i put in my bitter is suffice. 150g for wheat beers and larger.

To be fair if you just primed it, you could easily add it in like puravida says. excess carbonation is just released through the valve anyway, the aim is really to have enough pressure to serve it from the start to the finish of the keg.

How much does star san knock out at. It must be cheaper than Richies steriliser in the long run.
Not just in time saved but the cost of the gallons of water with the rinsing.

Star San is cheap when you think about ten quid gets you a little container but 1.5 ml makes you a litre of spray on sanitiser that needs 1 min to do its stuff great for hydrometers, thermometers, boiler taps and airlocks you drop fv lids you accidentally touch in the wrong spot... Etc I still like youngs cleaner steriliser for big stuff like your fv as it cleans too.

ah so cant it be used for the fv and barrels?
Yep, but you need to clean the FV/Barrel first.

I use Oxiclean and a sponge for that.

Once clean and rinsed a couple of hundred ml of starsan into vessel, lid on and shook around until it's all foam . . . then leave it, tip out when ready to reuse.

I use oxy to clean FV's then spray with videne and sometimes steam over a kettle if I am being really anal. Bottles get soaked in a bucket of oxi and then dunked in a bucket of videne prior to filling. :thumb:
