Has anyone tried date wine?

I was given a very elderly copy of a farmers weekly country wine book which had a recipe for date wine, this intrigues me but I wondered if anyone here had tried it ever? It makes about 3 litres of wine but you need 1kg of dates and I was unsure whether this may have dire consequences (if you follow my drift!)

So, anyone ever made or tried date wine? What is the finished artile like?
