Has anyone tried any of these?

Image063.jpg

I have just been given these little ladies from the Porterhouse Brewing Company and wondered if anyone had tried them. Also I wondered if I would be able to harvest the yeast from them. They are bottle conditioned and unpasteurised which i assume will make them suitable candidates. If so could I combine the harvest of all three bottles as they are different stouts and different ABV's?

Any thoughts anyone.

Hi,
You have to establish if they bottle using the primary yeast strain.
For initial fermentation some breweries use yeasts that are quite non-flocculant but are very flavourful and add charachter to the beer....if this is the case they then clear the beer and add a yeast with good sedimentary properties along with sugars to allow refermentation in the bottle.

If they have bottled using the primary strain, then you have something worth reculturing. If not, you are probably harvesting S04.

Markp is totally correct!
As you don't know the bottling yeast strain I would go ahead and brew cultures.
If the yeast is primary, you will have cultures you may never get again.
If not you have lost nothing!
