Hello

The results of my first all grain, all seemed to go well, but 1 week on and I seem to be growing a new life form in the FV ? ... is this normal in these quantities ? will it effect the end product ?

picture below (I hope)

I dont know much about AG brewing, but did you use protofloc? I have seen inumerable threads where people post a pic of their fv with some ominous gunk floating on it and the question "is it ruined" Most of the answers I have seen blamed it on protofloc causing the trub and yeast to floculate.

But then again, I know narthing! :wha:

I think jonewer is right, it looks like cauliflower which most of us blame on protofloc. You're beer will be fine :thumb:

thanks, I did use protofloc so that must be it, ... :thumb: any suggestions on how I could minimise this growth in the future ?

Nope, but if you find an answer please do tell the rest of us :D

How much protofloc are you all using? Bearing in mind that it's 1 to 4 grams per hectolitre and the small tablets are 2 to 2.5g each.

I break my protofloc tablets into 4 pieces and use one of those per 40L batch and get very clear worts with very little cauliflower ;)

There's two sizes of tablets that I've seen too. One is about the same size as whirlfloc (the ones I mentioned earlier) and there's also some about the size of washing powder tablets.

Sounds like people are using too much!

One of my fellow local brewers messed up the first time they used Protofloc and put a heaped teaspoon in a 25l brew and she said the wort eventually turned jellylike.

I agree with TS though, that sounds like a good amount to use.

To put it in perspective, we use 8 small tablets for a 700 litre brew.

I had the same thoughts read somewhere that 1/2 a tablet is enough for 23 ltr brews so I'm going to try it on the next two brews see if it makes a difference?
TS are you saying you use 1/4 tablet per 40ltr brew?

1/4 ish (they don't break evenly)tablet per 40L brew is correct :thumb:

That gives me wort clarity like this

:D

It'd be clearer if you hadn't got a frosted window!
Right then I'll go for 1/4 ish per brew and see how that goes. Have got 2 kegs empty so will be doing 2 brews as soon as I get back from hols :D

I Have done a brew using half a tablet, half because it powdered up when I tried to cut it, anyway it's a definite improvement in the fv no floating gunk and good clear wort, definatly going half tabs or less from now on!!! :D

Can I point out that the information I have on Murphys Protofloc is to use 1-4g per hectalitre, as a (small) tablet weights ~1.9?g, the correct dosage for 25L is 1/4 to 1 tablet . . . I tend to use 1/2 a gram in my 80L brews and get crystal clear wort into the fermenter.

Well somebody needs to tell Barley Bottom and other suppliers this as They say 1 Tablet per 5 gallon.
