Growler

I was at this amazing beer festival in Brick lane on Saturday (sore head this morning) and charmed the girl behind one of the bars to let me have a free growler (stop s******ing at the back, there.)
Now: what do I do with it? If I were to fill it from the kegerator wouldn't the beer just go flat? I'd also rather not carbonate in the growler as I'd have to pour three and a half pints in one go!
It's heavy duty glass with a screw top.

I have some some 1L growlers (which are swing top) and I often open one, pour half out, then close it again till the next day. The second opening seems to be almost as carbonated as the first

I've heard that freezing the growler ahead of filling it (via a tube) is best practise.
