Not seen them in my street, but have seen a couple on main roads, with ploughs on front... Have to say that their efforts seemed utterly pointless though!
What I'd have preferred to see was some army heavy earth moving equipment being brought out to clear the roads!

They were saying on the news last night that grit isn't much good in these conditions it is snow ploughs that we are short of.

Yeah, I'd heard that too... Apparently the grit / salt combo has a significantly reduced effect the lower the temperature goes... so much under -5 and you could frankly be just as well to put beer down... not that you would!

Thing is... it hasn't been much below about -2 / -3 out here... so grit would probably have worked if it had been put down when it could've been.

Humbug!

Now, what else can I moan about?

They don't grit my street. You would think they would considering I live next to a hospital and it's on the route ambulances take to get there

Their rational thinking is that if you are so close to a hospital and you have an accident it won't take long for an ambulance to get you, unless of course it was the ambulance that caused the accident skidding on the untreated road. :hmm: :hmm:

-12 here first thing today, took 5 mins to get the car doors open

Our street is never gritted (nor would I expect it to be) and doesn't catch the sun, so it will still be like glass days after everywhere else has cleared. Credit where it's due though, I'm voting “yes” because our Council are pretty good and main roads have been kept clear. However, I'm having to take my extended route* to w**k as my regular run crosses a county boundary and includes some country lanes which are also never gritted.

* Only adds half a mile but can take 5 minutes longer.

You cross out of the county

Brave man I wouldn't cross the border, well not south anyway or yorksh*re, unless I really had to.

Which reminds me to ask... have you guys got electricity in your homes sorted yet?

Friend of OH phoned the Council Highways and told them the road leading to the village school was covered in ice and cars were sliding all over the place.

They replied they wouldn't be sending a gritter out as in case it got stuck!

Unfortunately its mot the gritters that are the problem round here. Its the fact that the trains cant run with more than about 4" of snow on the ground.

For once our lot have got it right  ........ for the time being

Last winter our whole village was iced up for three weeks, only 4 wheel drive vehicles could get around, but even then it was very dodgy  I amongst others played hell @ our local politicians at all levels, they had complained the local school had been closed, but didn't actually help staff/pupils etc by leaving the roads in such a state :!: Grit bins were filled once and some local residents helped themselves and had nice clear driveways but put none on the roads  a couple still are not speaking to me because I told 'em it was for the roads not private use and they would be unhappy to be done for theft :!:

This year, Parish Council have got a supply of grit and a local chap who grits the appropriate areas (by the handful & with a bucket, you actually need very little to do some good :!: ) round the school, village shop etc and all the worst places to walk :thumb: the grit wagon ran the school road once and the road has remained open :thumb:

The result is much more cost effective, it's saved the council $$ and kept the village moving  we've had lots of snow and ice, temps down to about -12/-14 :!:
