Finally got this on tonight using the recipe from the Mikkeller book (multiplied ingredients by 1.15 to hit 23l). Target OG was 1.067 but missed that by some distance, only hit 1.062 and I'm not entirely sure why, I think it could because I'm weighing grain in a small bowl and I probably miscounted! Other than that everything went off without a hitch and I pitched the yeast I harvested from my last brew a week or so ago. 50g dry hops still to be added. The proper version is one of the best beers I've ever tried so I'm looking forward to this one.
 
Sounds good mate. I love Mikkeller beers, and the book is great for learning how to make great beer.
Is this the Simcoe one?
 
Sounds good Dr. I did the milk stout out of the book and its my best beer so far in 7 AG brews. Utterly delicious!

Funnily enough that is very near the top of my brew list, doing a Goose Island clone from Mitch Steele next then it'll be the milk stout. Did you follow the recipe to the letter? I was toying with swapping out the bittering hop to something I have in the freezer but not sure if I'll be brave enough. :lol:

Yep, followed exactly. Still relatively new to brewing so sticking with recipes for now . If you like milk stouts, this is delicious!
 
Checked it today and down to 1.012 so probably finished. Sample looked like mucky dishwater but wasted good. Added the dry hops so looking forward to trying again in a few days after cold crashing.
 
What a difference a few days and a cold crash makes, the mucky dishwater look has gone and it's fairly clear. Bottled it last night and the sample tasted very good. ABV should be around 6.6% which is more than strong enough.
 
Tried a bottle on Wednesday and it isn't great...in fact it isn't even good! It tastes remarkably like the NZ Pale Ale I brewed a while ago and also didn't like and the only common ingredient is the malted oats. The Mikkeller recipe just said to use flaked oats but I ordered the wrong thing and figured it wouldn't be a bit deal to use the malted but upon reading a little bit more it seems they do impart a warming flavour which is what I'm picking up and has overpowered the two brews I've used malted oats in. Ah well, we live and learn.
 
Tried another one last night and it's just bloody awful. I think the malted oats just aren't to my taste so hopefully I'll find someone who likes it so I can give it away. I'll definitely be doing it again with normal oats at some point.
