hi we go on a farm he is sound with us he grows winter wheat and barly etc can i use any of it for brewing its just a thought ????? :wha: :thumb:

no , it has to be malted before it can be used , i think that is drying it out etc , seen it done on tv its not worth the effort . best to just buy it bulk as its cheap that way

PMSL - no choice here i have to malt me own.
Just get it threshed and sieve all the c**p out of it ie stalks and 'other' seeds that tend to turn up in it including wheat sometimes.
Then malt it- i do 5kg batches at a time
Fill a big bowl and soak barley for 2 hours under water then rinse off and leave in bowl for 8 hours then 2 soaking and 8 drying then 2 soaking again then 8 drying by which time it will have started sprouting so needs to be kept damp until rootlets are 3 x the length of the grain. Then you dry properly by air if hot enough 32c here so no probs or bung in oven on low 50-80 c for 8 hours or so then you can roast some once its fully dried.
Bit of a pain to do but i enjoy it now and im on my 3rd batch at the mo'. :thumb:

If the farmer has dried the grain in a grain dryer at normal temperatures (hotter than mid 30'sC) then the seed is dead and it won't germinate. So it would be pretty useless for malting.

Also, feed barley or barley that isn't grown for malting is usually high in nitrogen and will: throw a haze in the finished beer (there are ways around this - e.g. using maize, rice etc in the mash); it will heighten mouthfeel on the final beer; it will darken the beer (that's why most rustic farm beers are orange!).

Get some wheat and brew witbier, it's best made with unmalted wheat. It's great for saison too. And grand cru.

The grain i get is au natural - not oven dried or anything dont think a turk would even contemplate using an oven.
Also not sure what its grown for here - possibly animal feed but i've never had a cloudy beer until i brewed with a load of wheat in the mix that i couldnt be chewed removing in the end.

Just done a few calcs as wanted to see what kind of wastage i get from malting.
Did 2 12lb batches and after malting, and through washing, spillage and wastage i have exactly 21lbs 12 ozs or 9.57Kg with a loss of 1.31Kg of which some can be put down to moisture evaporation so not bad at all i reckon. Enough for a couple of brews, and i have another 12lb malting at the moment too and out of the previous batch i have had 2kg in the oven to roast it.
And to top it off my Electronic grain mill i picked up is the dogs rod! went through a 12lb batch in no time at all so happy with that !! :thumb:
