Im thinking of making a lager! No problem I hear you say. The question is....do I do grain or 2xtins of Diablo? I have heard of folk using the 2 tin method, is it so you dont need sugar?? Cheers for any help on this one. :thumb:

The two tin kits tend to come out at a better quality because they don't contain the kilo of simple sugar that you add to a 1 can kit. They tend to come out with more body and are just overall more pleasing.

As for the lager, do you have the equipment needed to ferment at lager temps?

I was thinking of brewing in the same room as I ferment beer. Would that be wrong? :thumb:

All grain and a temp controlled fermenter is the way to go, or two tins and a temp controlled fermenter.

Both with proper lager yeast.

Lager yeast tends to prefer the low teens, where as ale yeast likes the upper teens to low 20's.

Fermenting it in the room you do ale in won't give you decent results, unless you are controlling fermetation temps.

Yea, for proper lager (with lager yeast), you will need a way to cool things down considerably. Especially when you get to the "lagering" stage which is like 0c-2c or something like that.

I rec grabbing a two can kit of something nice and light and it won't be far off from a lager, but will use ale yeast.

I can only comment on doing lagers with tins being unable to devote enough time to become an AG man. I can say with confidence that even the single tin lagers are pretty damn good and very easy. I am starting to supplement using spray malt to add body but to my mind and (perhaps underdeveloped) tastebuds perfectly palatable and a damn sight better than anything I have ever bought.

The coopers lager is fine indeed, but the cheaper ones I would definitely be suggesting adding a little spray malt at least. ruddy cheap for what you get too...

I don't know much about AG stuff but as I understand a good lager is apparently quite difficult to do and it has to be chilled during the brew, I am guessing (and somebody will doubtless confirm or deny) that the lagering bit is where it gets brought down in temp to arrest the fermentation for a bit, whilst something else happens. What that something else is I have no clue!! :)

When you say 2xtins of Diablo, do you mean a kit that normally comes with 2 tins like the Woodfordes ones (wherry etc.) or 2 tins of a kit that you would normally add sugar or spraymalt to (like coopers kits frex)? I haven't tried the Diablo kits, so I'm not sure.

Just two tins of Diablo really. The single tin is propped up with sugar, so the use of another tinnny adds the extra malt sugar. Just wondered what others thought?

If they are designed to be bulked up with spraymalt or sugar, adding another tin instead of the sugar/sparymalt will also double the bittering so bear that in mind.
