can anyone recommend a supplier in Ireland that could crush grain to a 1.2 spec ( for BM).

I hear the malt miller can do this, and also brew uk can for certain brands but shipping over could be pricey.Can geterbrewed? I emailed them but as usual didn’t here back. The local Belfast shop just has it on factory setting so can’t set it at 1.2. Can anyone recommend anywhere else?

How about getting a cheap mill and setting it up yourself.

I got the one in the photographs for less than £20. It has paid for itself and I can mill my own flour to make a genuine Malt Loaf that tastes ten times better than shop bought loaves.

I had the heavy duty drill already but it comes with a handle for fit young men. :thumb:

The bottom photograph shows three settings for milling the grain down to flour.

Never asked them for a specific crush but its worth a try. They're in Dublin. I'm in Glasgow and the shipping is much the same as anywhere UK or geterbrewed.

If you have no success with them, you should be able to use a UK company and get delivery for 6 quid up to 25kgs. Usually shipping is free if over 60/70 quid and under 25kgs.

You could try phoning geterbrewed and collect it.

I have what looks like the same Corona type grain mill myself, but never thought of putting it in an old FV.
I wrap a BIAB bag around mine and grind outside, but have to brush up afterwards. I think I'll try and replicate your setup....
 
I was considering a malt mill but id prefer to not have the hassle, but its an option.

funnily enough just had an email through from homebrewco so must be on their listing, so have replied back asking them.
only problem with bulk orders is that the next couple of recipes i want to do have complicated grain bills so i would need 4 or 5 different malts and it would take me a year to use 25kg of pale malt alone so not sure how fresh it would be.

i can never get geterbrewed on the phone- i think they only answer on Thursday and Fridays when they have deliveries out!
 
Grinding your own malt is not much of a hassle - I fill my boiler and put it on to heat - by the time it's at mash temperature I've had time to grind the pale malt and weigh out the speciality malts. So it doesn't really add to your brewday and your efficiency will improve no end as freshly ground malt works so much better than stale ready crushed stuff. Others may dissagree but that's what I've found.
 
I'm another one who has started to mill my own grain. I bought a 2 roller one from Malt Miller and I can adjust the grain crush. It has also pushed up my efficiency from mid 60s to low 80s. This is my setup, its no hassle at all and takes just a few minutes using a cordless drill.

How did you attach the mill to the FV, Bigjas? That looks very interesting, as I have been having issues with pale malt crushes of late.

For instance, I asked one supplier (WHS) about the Maris Otter crush and obtained a response from Crisp. the Maltster, that "... the fractions of malt are approximately as follows - 12% flour, 68% coarse and fine grits, 20% husk. This is crushed to be the optimum grist for commercial scale single infusion mash tuns which are the norm in English microbreweries."

12% flour would seem to make a big mess in a GF, as I get a tennis ball of congealed flour each time I decant the wort via a BIAB bag after the GF cuts out at circa 85C on the temp increase post sparge.
 
A bit of feedback. Geterbrewed said they can adjust the crush if you note it on order as they crush everything themselves. Not sure about the gf, but for the BM 1.2 is recommended. Homebrew.ie said they could do a finer or a courser crush but not sure they can match exact specifications.
 
Slid, I just cut some MDF board and screwed it to the lid to make the lid a bit more stiff. I then bolted the mill to the MDF (with a hole obviously). So I just take the lid off once I've finished milling and mash in from that. It works very well, and I like the fact I can adjust the crush myself. Its not cheap, but its worth it to me.

You mean sans drill? Yeah I do. I've got the 'barley crusher' mill. Takes a few minutes to mill the grain whilst mash liquor is heating up. Nice little early morning work out
 
You could always go to the local Belfast shop like most of us, make up your grain bill there or bring it with you, and mill to your hearts content. Talk to them for advice: they do it themselves.
