I went to my local Beer Supermarket today to get some Reasearch Material to find out if I liked Mild's or not. While I was there I noticed Brothers Ginger Cider so thought I would get a bottle for the Mrs. Apparently it was VERY NICE she prefers it to Crabbies Ginger Beer.

We spotted it in our oMrrsino's too. T'missus wants me to make some. Turbocider mthod, obv, but how much root ginger to add? On a different forum somebody used a thumb-sized piece and got a "subtle undertone", here somebody used 150g and thinks might use more next time... I have 100g in the freezer, better get some more.

I would use 150g grated and boiled in a ltr of water then add Apple juice 2-3 ltr allow to cool and nutrient, citric, tannin and yeast. Ferment in a bucket for 3-4 days then syphon and strain into DJ.
Would be ready in about 3 weeks i reckon, i love the cloudy stuff i made but if left it all drops out perfectly clear with loads of sediment in the bottle.

Does one need to peel it before grating? Would finely slicing do?
Does it really need citric with all that acid from the apple juice?

I took a root about the size of my hand. The first time I peeled & grated it, this time I just peeled & thickly sliced for ease of straining. It came out the same :thumb:

I didn't add that I used that for 20 litres , ( a corny full).
20 L apple juice, 1 tsp tannin, the above ginger, & cider yeast. Ferment, rack, leave for a few weeks, keg, Nirvana :thumb:

I had a bottle of Crabbies Ginger beer after work last night. and after comparing it to Brothers ginger cider i had last week at work, i noticed a big difference. i believe that the Brothers is a lot nicer (but i'm a brothers fanatic!) The crabbies has a lot more spice to it, the brothers is more of a relaxation drink. if anyone gets a good recipe for a brothers ginger cider Clone or just close enough TC, please can you post it, i really want to have some! (especially because its a limited edition)

Cheers

I've just done this (yesterday):
160g root ginger peeled and thinly sliced, into a pan with 1ltr apple juice (Lidl Solevita cheapest this week), brought slowly to simmering.
Added to a demijohn containing 2 more ltr of the aj and a mug of well-brewed Earl Grey, 1 tsp nutrient.
When cooled, sachet of Young's cider yeast lobbed in.
I'll top it up tomorrow with more aj.

i put a few bits of the lazy ginger from a jar into the demi john at the 2nd stage and it came out nice with a gentle ginger backround
