I'm currently thinking about using a generic bittering hop in my brews at the 60 min addition. Ideally i'm looking for something high AA that will provide nice smooth bittering without adding much hop flavor to the finished brew so that my late addition hops stand out.

Any recommendations?

I have read that John Palmer only uses Galena in all his brews for bittering but over here we'd want something more available.
What about Target? I like Challenger but the AA is quite variable.

Why at 60min if it's only for bitterness? I though late additions were more for aroma, rather than bitterness. :wha:

i use target and challenge and northdown, target on its own is harsh but does work. :thumb:

Thanks I think I will take a look at Magnum, sounds like what I am after.

By 60 mins I mean the start of the boil. I usually only boil for 60 mins. I've been reading a bit about first wort hopping so will probably give that a crack on the next brew.

Some people only boil for 60mins (that is 60 mins to go, not elapsed), so that would be the bittering addition - aroma additions are normally from 30mins onwards.

Thanks for explaining. Planning some extracts soon, so must remember it's in countdown format!

Marynka and Dana are cheap and worked out for me. Magnum and Apollo are two of the ones that people vouch for (and Apollo is surprisingly cheap right now).

I'd go pretty high AA too. Maybe aurora or northern brewer? it's a hallertau variant so pretty tame flavour.

but yep, i dont see the problem at all, bittering is just bittering in many, but not all, ways. if you were first wort hopping, that'd be different...

Warrior is the one for me, mild aroma, clean strong bittering, an excellent bite to any beer needing a strong bittering foundation, and at 15-17% AA is very economical.

I have often used Northern brewer for bittering. It add a rounded bitterness and is usually 9% AAs. It was, I believe, bred for the beers on Northern Scotland, hence the name.
