As per thread title, I've been conditioning a brew using hops I froze last year and tested it tonight and for the amounts I used (75g each Cascade and Citra, with 75g Galaxy fresh) for a dry hop, the beer hasn't turned out anywhere near as hoppy and in my face as expected.

Do hops lose flavour if frozen? Or do amounts over 25-50g just not have the desired effect?

Thanks in advance!!

I'm afraid that I have to put this into the "How long is a piece of string?" category. Sorry.

Rapidly frozen stuff (e.g. Birdseye Frozen Peas which go from vine to frozen within an hour) retain 99% of their taste and aroma.

However, anything that is left to oxidise in the open air, or dehydrate, or go away from their natural state, will lose "something" before being frozen.

So, with regard to your query the answers are "Maybe." and "Maybe not."

However, tomorrow I will start some serious brews and intend to use up the 130 grams of hop pellets that are currently in my freezer ... :thumb:

... so I sincerely hope that they have retained a lot of their flavour and aroma.:whistle:

In short yes they will lose flavour, aroma etc. Plenty of online calculators to work out how to get the same effect by adding extra

Freezers don't halt the ravages of time, they just slow it down a lot. And some things may deteriorate faster in freezers (e.g. coffee beans, debatable, I think its the oils subliming?). Don't buy more than you know you need, and don't fret about your favourite "Simcoe" (or whatever else) running out at the shop, there's always a good alternative about. I always store hops in a freezer, but don't keep more than 6 months supply.

I keep all of my opened hop bags in zip lock bags in the freezer. Much to my wife's annoyance. Not like they last long opened until I use them [emoji106] I think it helps.
