A mate is offering me an undercounter fridge and an undercounter freezer for free, I've seen the how-to for the fermentation fridge, it all seems fairly simple. My question is what would be more suitable for fermenting ales a fridge or a freezer? If I wanted to lager in the future what would be more suitable?

If you have room get both :thumb:

Keeping yeasts, hops, fermenting, lagering, crash cooling, kegerator, beer fridge etc... the list goes on for potential uses..

For fermenting I would think a fridge just due to the temps being closer, but I guess you could also use a freezer - there will be someone who has tried and can help I am sure.

If you buy / build a temp controller and connect that via a plug you could use either ( my fridge seals quite happily around the probe wire) :thumb:

I think I read on here that freezer motors would get stressed being switched on and off by the temp controller more than a fridge. I may be wrong but it sticks out in my mind as to the reason I didn't convert my freezer.

Freezers are fitted with a low back pressure compressor and won't like running at the higher temps. Will eventually pack in

Ahhh - there's always someone on here who knows you see :thumb: Must try and remember that one...

You could use the freezer for lagering though :thumb:
Best check if it is one where the cooling coils go between the shelves as these are not much use for us.

Thanks for clearing this one up chaps, looks like fridge is the way to go. I'm sure the freezer cooling is incorporated into the shelves which may make things a bit awkward.

You could always keep it for freezing hops yeasts and summer fruits for wines and fruit beers.

I think I could easily fill an undercounter one.. as it is mine fight for space with a side of pork and just been told I have to make room for half a deer as well
