Had a couple of bottles of the above last night and noticed plenty of yeast in the bottom (can't really say noticed because I looked on purpose because I am now fully entangled within the beer web). Does anyone know if this is the primary yeast source or just a lager yeast used for conditioning? :wha:

Can't answer your question [would be interested to read the answer, though, as apparently it's on offer at Lidl just across the road from my office] but you are not supposed to brew with that yeast... you are supposed to drink it!

You an brew with the yeast if you want to brew a wheat beer with the same primary yeast as Franziskaner and yes I got mine from Lidl too and very nice it is.

good question, I wonder what the answer is. Hmm, I know Erdinger use different yeast to bottle as to ferment. Probably the same with this brew, but hey, I have two bottles here so I might try cultivating some and brewing a small batch to see how it tastes. I am going to brew some wheat beer soon, so a 1 gallon batch on cultivated yeast could solve the problem.

As far as I was aware, because of the unstable nature of wheat beer yeasts, pretty much every wheat beer in bottles 'mit hefe' has actually been filtered and reseeded with a lager yeast. The only one that uses the primary strain is Schneider weisse

By far my favourite commercial wheat beer. I think reseeding with lager yeast changes the profile of the beer ie I get a lager tang from the likes of Erdinger.
