We've also had a plague of flies this year, fungus gnats, fruit flies and house flies. All house plants now have AT LEAST 1/2" of gravel above the compost. We also got some fly traps and fly paper around the house. The most effective we've found, through experiementation and exasperation, are the sheets that you often see in greenhouses. We still have some round the house and they're still catching flies although now not so many.
Since putting the gravel on the house plants the problem is definitely reduced. Odly I'm not seeing many around the fermenter(s).
