Flaked oats

I have in the past, they are not the same thing though, porridge oats tends to be more broken/powdery where as flaked oats are usually mostly whole not sure I could discern a difference in the finished product but I don't have a sufficticated palate.
 
I am sure there will be a difference as the purists will say but for all intents and purposes as with the previous answers I substitute them all of the time infact some brewers put them in virtually every brew for mouthfeel and possibly better head retention?
