My first post to the forum, forgive me if it's old ground but I can't seem to find a definite answer.

I'm looking to reduce cost by bulk buying flaked oats from somewhere other than a home brew store, they retail around £4 per kg in home brew shops and that's before you add postage. I have ready that you can buy quick or instant oats which are exactly the same thing at a much lower price but the examples tend to be American brands from American supermarkets.

Today I risked a purchase and bought Mornflakes Superfast Oats from tesco for £1 per Kg. I am looking for a bit of advice as to if these are infact basically the same as are stocked by home brew stores? my aim is to put these straight into an all grain mash with no pre cooking required.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Flaked oats are flaked oats , same as. You can use rolled or flaked but flaked tends to be smaller. They are made smaller by grinding down to become superfast or quick but essentially the same as long as they are not flavoured. I always use supermarket own brand flaked oats, smaller pieces the better they are. You can add them direct to the mash.

I use Scotts porridge oats because my missus buys them and there's always a box floating around! Mind you, she gets hacked off is she wants some breakfast and I've used them all!
