I pitched my first extract on Saturday night, all went well even although the kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it. By last night the bubbler was going at it, as I would have expected, at a nice steady rate. I got up at 5am today to get ready for work and it was going a little bit faster but still nothing untoward. I've came home today to find the bubbler filled with foam as the FV has completely filled

I've never had anything even remotely like this using the kits, so that was the first difference I noticed with the extract recipe. While there was a little bit of wort spilled out around the bung I thought it would be rude not to have a little sniff of it. OMG it smells like beer..... decent beer! Obviously this was the second difference I noticed as with the kits there is that clinical homebrew smell/taste from everything and 9 times out of 10 the odour is very pungent and often eggy. Nothing like this, at worst I would describe the smell as a slightly sweet/stale beer.

So... looks like I'm on the right track. I've never had a kit look like this when fermenting, the foam is often very thin with absolutely zero body. This looks to have cracking body and head already, and it's only 2 days old.

As a little sidenote my bubbler is now acting very strange. I'm assuming this will be down to the amount of foam or something like that. Nothing will happen for a good 20 seconds, then all of a sudden it will erupt in a furious vent of bubbles.... for a good few seconds, before subsiding for another break.

Fascinating stuff, I'm expecting good things now

Sounds exciting. I am looking forward to doing my first extract once I have some bottles ready. Kits are nice but I want to spread my wings a little and go to the next step.

While it's still going full tilt I'd take the airlock and bung out, cover the hole with clean damp cloth and have a clean up, clean the bung and airlock and put it back all clean and nice, don't want nasties breeding :nono: ;)

Surprising at times how violent the fermentation process can be, I was amazed the first time I used Safale SO-5, them yeasties realy know how to party

Not half, I was actually wondering if it was the liquid Wyeast smack pack thing that was making all the difference lol.

Cheers for the advice, I have loads of spare airlocks and bungs so I'll get a couple at the ready for a quick swap :D
