Hi There,

Well I've been meaning to get on with my first brew for a while now. Recently I have enjoyed some beautiful beers in West Yorkshire at The Sparrow, Bradford, The Grove Huddersfield, Foley's Leeds and got some delightful treats at Beeritz, Headinlngley Leeds and Saltaire Wines. CRAFT BEER IS KING! It's all happening Up North and I want to to get stuck in!

I have a Beer Brewing starter Kit - There's a mash tun (spelling?) and a keg. and tubes/funnels/jug etc.. ooh and a big long spoon! Not sure what to do with the Keg? I thought you have to pressurise it to keep it for longer but I don't have the stuff to do that.

Does any one have a suggestion for a first brew?

All the best,

Ben

now then Ben. Welcome to the forum! I'm from just round the corner from you in Guiseley. Plenty of brewers in this area. Get yourself searching round this forum and you'll soon have all the info you need!

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds as though if you have a starter kit then item unlikely you have a mash tun. A Mash Tun is an insulated vessel, with a grain filter in the bottom.

It's more likely you have a fermenting vessel, along with your plastic barrel, and hydrometer and other little bits.

If you read around you will find out how to prime the barrel,.or how to cheaply add gas via a sparklet or S30 gas bottle.

Hey. Thanks for the info and responses. I have since read some good books on the subject and have learnt a lot too! Even if my first brew does't go according to plan, I'm sure I will learn a lot more.

Hi Ben
Hows the brewing going. Being from Bradford myself and a real ale man through and through i would recommend that you get your down to the Fighting **** on preston street Bradford. In my opinion this is by far the best real ale pub in Bradford by miles. ;)

Hey... Sorry for missing your post. It's a while back now. I need to check on here more often or set up some notifications!

Yeah been to the fighting **** a couple of times usually after the Sparrow so it's a little hazy in my mind, plus I still couldn't find it on my own for some reason! :hmm:

Beers gone well for my first. just did an extract brew which is currently in secondary fermentation but should be good to go in a week or so.

Thanks for the recommendation.

C'mon Ben, where is the write up and pics from your first brew!?!

Sorry... Is it too late to write it up? I shall do it any way! I am sure that my experience may contain a small nugget of insight for somebody out there!
