well it finally happened, i've started my first AG batch today, went around to my old mans house and he is showing me how to do it( he has all the kit and around 40 years of knowledge!) we are at the mashing stage right now but looking good so far!
the aroma's are stunning, worth doing all grain for that, reminds me of being a kid and the old man mashing in the kitchen years a go, im now 45!

will take a few pictures and post them later on with the ingredients, not that a lot of you need any info :)
im sure someone will post a few tips on improving the beer/ingredients which will be gratefully accepted

there is more to this AG than meets the eye (gypsum, epsom salts,ph testing etc) but i know im in good hands and i have a wealth of knowledge at the end of the phone, cheers dad!

Lucky Bar Steward, brewing with your Old Man! Plus brewing AG, you'll remember this day, when you sample the beer, and................for a bloody long time to come :thumb:

Brew Well,

Screwy

Good luck i made my first all grain brew a week ago today and yes the smells are superb look forward to seeing your pics. I bottled yesterday i must admit AG tastes so much better than the kits

Nice .. well done that man!

Hope you have a fantastic day - and we all love to see pics! You should come up with a nice label to mark the occasion!

FINISHED!! WOO HOO!

as promised here are the ingedients i used

8.2 lbs pearl pale ale malt
4 oz crystal wheat malt
2 oz crystal malt
80 g east kent goldings
nottingham yeast
started with 32lt of water treated with 12 ml of crs

used approx 11lt to mash and added 2g of gypsum which took 1 and a half hours
sparged till reading was around 1008-1010 coming out of the tun, this gave us nearly 5 gallons to boil,
added 6g of gypsum, 5g of epsom salts and 1.4g of salt (pease dont ask, im new to this! lol)
then boiled for 1 and a half hours topping up to around 5 gallons near the end of the boil, the hops went in like this
40g at the beginning
20g with 20 mins left
20g when the rapid boil ended
managed just over 32 pints into the fermenter, a good result me thinks!
dad thinks we got between 75-80% effiency, dunno how that works but i ain't gonna argue

the boiler element was from a cheapie asda kettle which cost less than a fiver, tiny element but worked a treat, well suprised.
all the filters used dad made and refined over the years so they work a treat, and mum kept us supplied with tea and cupcapes and cooked me a breakfast when i got there, so was a quality day!

SMELLS AMAZING!
i have written this all down to keep a record so it can be repeated

will post photos when i work out how to.

forgot to mention the sg is 1043, meaqsured with a refractometer, handy little tool!

photos as promised

could be the start of something beautiful!

all with a tiny asda kettle element under a fiver, worked a treat

thanks for all the support and comments im well chuffed, the old man thinks this forum is amazing as i do, problem is all i have on my mind now is what to brew for the next batch, i think i am hooked on this AG brewing lark, is there a cure? because if there is i want to know how to avoid it lol, even though i still have 2 kits left to start (woodfordes wherry, a personal favourite and coopers cervesa for the son ) i thought kits were cheap per pint when done but AG seems to be even cheaper, its gets better all the time, i have 3 barrels and around 200 bottles, i dont think i have enough!
