This may seem like a very daft question, so please forgive my ignorance! When you make the strained out of a framework of copper pipe, is that frame then placed in the boiler or mash tun with the holes/slots facing up or down? I think I've seen pictures of builds where they are up, and have certainly read in one guide they should face down....

Does it matter??
 
The slots in the mash tun pipes, does it matter? :wha:

I've tried both, and so far I prefer slots up. When I use slots down the grain seems to pack down more and slow the run off too much.

Just modified my pipes so the slots are offset by about 90deg to see if it improves things.

So my answer to your question is ; try different setups to see which suits your set up best :thumb:
