Been playing around with brew calculator for my first all grain and came up with this
batch size 21l
boil size 26.5l
mash 60mins boil 60mins
maris otter uk pale 4.5k
rolled oats 500g
hop citra
30g 60 mins
50g 15 mins
20g flame out 80c
yeast us-05
strike water 15l
sparge 16l
what I would like now is critisiem from you advice good or bad, I want you to pick holes in it, this is or will be my first attempt at all grain, its a simple brew with one malt and rolled oats and one hop I don't want to get loads of flavours I want to taste what I have done, happy brewing

Hop schedule:
25g 60 mins
20g 10 mins
55g flame out 80c

Citra makes for a harsh bittering. You could substitute another (and cheaper) bittering hop for the 60m addition and split your late hops between FO@80 and a Dry hop.

Agree with slid, either cut down on 60 min addition or use a cheaper/better bittering hop. Out of interest what IBUs did you get with that recipe?

For a first brew I went with a single malt, but appreciate why you might want to use the oats

Thanks for the advice guys will look at hops more, one flew over I cant remember ibu's but I did it in home brew calculator, just done another one in beer mate 30g citra at 60 mins it shows 45.5 ibu,s, see what you mean about harshness will look at that, on with the learning curve happy days

That's going to be very bitter. If you're looking to use a 100g pack of Citra and want to get the most flavour then you could ditch the 60 min addition and move it all to inside the last 15 minutes. The recipe builders will help you keep the IBUs where you want them.

i normally keep a pack of Magnum hops in the freezer for the 60m addition to hit my IBU target and save the expensive hops for WP and dry hop athumb..

Cheers Steve, very slowly a picture is forming in my head, I am in no rush, the klarstein doesn't arrive till next week, 2 beers I really like are hobgoblin gold and old empire ipa they can go on the back burner until I find my feet
np matey, I find beersmith well worth its price, i only ever brew my own recipes now

I only needed to read this far down the tread and found myself in total agreement. If you had 50g more of Citra, though, you could use them as a dry hop and in 6 weeks be drinking the beer I'm drinking as I type this (more or less!) I could bang on about it's refreshing zestiness or it's delightful, ideal bitterness but whatever, it's bloody lovely.
PS. I used Target for bittering, 30g Citra @ 10 mins and 70g flameout cooled to 80 plus the dry hop.

Hi Gerrit, I haven't tried a recipe yet my boiler only came yesterday so no time to get any grains and stuff, I put 4 smashes in, pale ale with different hops and yeast and a kolsch, will prob start with pale ale, think I will just buy a 25kg bag of maris otter pale and build from there and see were the journey takes me
