Sitting here, chewing on a Mönschshof Schwarz brings back lots of memories of living in Germany in the 80's.

I used to live in Duisburg, where the Ruhr meets the Rhein. Great nights out for beer were usually in Düsseldorf or Cologne.
The Schumacher brewery on Steinstrasse in Düsseldorf almost prided itself on having the rudest service you could possibly imagine, but perhaps one of the finest beers anywhere. That and their Flöns (bloodsausage) with onions and Löwensenf mustard.. Ooh my. Twice a year they did something called Lattbier (I think it was called that) which was all the spill-offs collected was absolutely a get-there-early day. I used to work at the Deutsche Bank there and there was only one topic of conversation two weeks before that!
In Cologne there was the amazing Päffgen brewhouse with a much nicer vibe. Their knock-out Kölsch with an Eisbein and spuds. Just amazing.
Ddorf also had the Ueriger and in Cologne there was also Peters.
But I'll reserve my absolute favourite for König Pils in Duisburg. Monika, my darling best girlfriend ever, used to work there. Every employee got a crate of the freshest beer every week free. Monika didn't drink beer. It was the sweetest beer I have ever tasted.
Guys.. I tell you. As we get older we realise things a bit too late..
I moved to Finland.
Can somebody please come over and give me a slap?

Have a top weekend lads ;-)
Matt

Btw. If you do ever go to Schumacher's, don't be offended by the service. It's not because you're a foreigner - they talk like that to their mothers!

It sounds fantastic (apart from the service ) I've even heard of a few of those beers , yes you do need a slap by the sounds of it , any plans moving back ? Hope your weekend goes well too

I'm not at all familiar with any of those mate, apart from Becks.
Thanks for the tips. Be looking out for them in my local Alko.

State-run shop but not at all bad.

Loads of other Deutsch favorites. Just depends where you are. It's always best in its own home town - no surprise there.
Flens to a Spaten. Have never travelled in the old DDR, though. Hmm.. Got nowt better to do this summer..
Perhaps time to oil the bike chain, see if the kids brought the tent back in one piece and pedal over.
Leipzig sounds interesting..
;-)

LOL. Cheers pal! Nope. No plans to move back to UK. Occasional visits are enough to convince me not to.
Seriously.
Got family here now. Son's about to do his national service here. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Daughter's about to go to Uni to start being a doctor. She wants to move to Aussie and has promised to take me with her.
I love England but I can brew a decent beer, watch Man City on the internet and talk ***** to you from behind a computer screen anywhere.. ;-)
Miss my sister more than anything though.
Maybe one day. I dunno.

Give us a shout if you do, we've got room for about 30 tents.
