Hi GA, I seem to remember you are a picture framer by trade? If I've remembered that correctly, would you mind me asking if I need to do anything special when getting a picture framed to be hung in a bathroom? I would rather the picture didn't get damaged by any potential damp getting in there.

First of all is the picture of any value? If it is monetary or sentimental and it can't be replaced then don't put it in the bathroom.

Second is it on paper or is it already on a board or is it a canvas. If it is a stretched canvas then it will be fine just to frame it. If it is already on board then it will need to be framed with a mount around it and glass. Finally if it is on paper and has no value whatsoever, then board mount it onto self adhesive board and frame it in a mount and behind glass, but be sure that it has no value or the conservation police may come after you (er sorry wrong forum and wrong in joke  )

If have a picture in my bathroom which has been framed in a mount and after 12 months shows no signs of moisture etc. As long as it is securely taped up on the back with either a self adhesive brown paper tape or brown paper tape then it will be fine. Don't use masking tape or anything like that :nono: :nono: the tape will eventually give.

Hope that helps. :thumb:

As long as it is mounted to a board and it is behind glass (with a mount ) and taped up it shouldn't get damp. :thumb: :thumb:

While we're having a 'ask Grays a question day' - can you recommend a good forum for cheese making? I did a course a few years back and never really continued. Any forums with a good DIY bias are always appreciated

Cheeseforum.org is rarely good. It is mainly american and antipodean so when you want a question answered no one is around, but they are friendly and helpful. Swift pint from here is on there as well. (and he is having far more luck with blues than me  ) :thumb:

Anymore non brewing questions?

How do I make a poster hang flat in a glass fronted frame. Do I glue it to a back board or just tape it at the top of the back board and let it hang. There will be a mount between the poster and the glass.

:hmm: :hmm:

Interesting question.

The problem with posters is that they are made out of thin cheap paper.

If the poster is old and has value then the last thing you want to do is stick it down to a board and even taping it in would be a no no. In that instance it needs reversible mounting were the attaching of the poster is totally removable without leaving any trace.

No assuming that it isn't valuable then the best thing to do is have it dry mounted, either onto self adhesive board (from hobby craft) or taking it to a friendly framer who will dry mount it between rollers or better still in Hot vacuum press.

If that is not an option and it is fairly flat then you can attach with small bits of tape at the top of the mount and let it hang down.

Personally I would dry mount it preferably in a hot press depending on the condition of the poster. :thumb:

Thanks, I'll check it out sometime.
