Hi Lads

I have just whitewashed the wifes ceiling in the kitchen yesterday after popping open a bottle of pilstner, This was the only one to this thank god. Any idea why it would do this and not any of the other ones. It was in the fridge for a few days as so were some others but they were fine at a loss here why this would happen. I know that i put 1 sugar in some of then and 1 1/2 in others would this be the cause.

Cheers ........G.......

What size are the bottles?

When you say that you put 1 sugar in some and 1 1/2 in others, does that mean teaspoons?

That sounds like a case of too much sugar to me.

Hi James,

Sorry no a small tea spoon in each bottle only and 1 and 1/2 in some...........G

Should be about 1/2 a teaspoon per bottle.

I realise that Pilsners should be more carbonated than ales, but commercial ones are bottled under controlled conditions.

Even with 1/2 a teaspoon I find the beer too fizzy for my tastes. More along the lines of a pilsner style carbonation (although I don't store my bottles in a cool place).

Hi James,

Ok mate that may be the case then, As soon as it was opened it went mad and sprayed all over the kip, Must say wife wasnt too please........She just mopped the floor lol.

Ok will drop further brews of pilstner to 1/2 teaspoon, Would that be same way to go with bitter as i have a brew in FV that needs to be bottled today.

Cheers..............G

Yep.

It's another thing that depends on taste. 1/2tsp is a good starting point though. I certainly wouldn't do more - I don't like exploding bottles ;)

Hi D,

Yep sounds that way will change to 1/2 a teaspoon to save washing the ceiling with beer, It is such a wash and would save me having to rewash the wifes floor again....lol.

Cheers Guys..................G

Just my 2p worth, but if it was only one bottle out of a batch then the chances are that it was double dosed with priming sugar, easily done if you get distracted :(
The best way to avoid this happening again is to bulk prime before bottling. Just measure out your desired amount of sugar, dissolve in a little boiling water, allow to cool, stir Gently into the bulk of beer and then bottle as usual :thumb:

Like TS said bulk priming is the way to go if you're bottling the whole fermenter. At least you didn't open it in that bathroom you were telling us about :D
(ps) I moved this topic for you gerry as it wasn't exactly a brewday thread ;)
