Hello, just been given a home brew kit for Christmas, something I've been looking into for a while, my other hobbies are cars and general tinkering (great bloke, cried a bit at The X factor final), I'm looking forward to joining in. Toodles, Wayne
 
Great, so having done some reading on here my plan is, brew in the fv, take measurement, leave 7 days measure, day 10 measure, if both are the same then wait until the brew goes quiet (day 14-ish? ) then decant to a pressure keg and wait about 2 weeks? If I'm wrong anywhere on that please point out, it's only what I've gleaned from reading on here, thanks, Wayne.

Just my ramblings, don't shoot.

Sounds good. Temperature wil play a big part in fermentation times also the results. Aim to stay between 18 and 22 celcius for a good result. It can be a bit tricky if you don't have temperature control so wrap the fv up in a nice warm blanket over night if need be.

Fermentation is exothermic ie it produces heat which will help keep the temp up once it gets going.

Take a reading the day after the airlock stops bubbling then another a couple of days later. If they are the same then bingo, ready for secondary.

Search fleabay for 'homebrew airlock grommet' and it will show most of the ones available. I suggest you go for one of the smaller ones as the hole you drill in the fv lid needs to be be tidy to get a good seal. You probably won't achieve that at the size you need for a larger bung type unless you have a set of core bits.

If you have a local home brew shop I'm sure they can advise, I have also seen a variety in Wilkos.
 
I assume you know you need to prime your keg? If not have a search on here, there is plenty of info :thumb:

Will be using a King Keg, (cheers aunty ;-) ) Am thinking of going with dissolving 125g brew sugar in 250ml hot water, adding to keg and then siphoning the beer, two weeks in the cupboard, a week somewhere cooler, then drink? Do I go for a top or bottom tap? Will I need CO bulbs? Greatly appreciate the help so far guys, need any help with car related questions ask away :geek:
 
Sounds good to me although just use normal sugar. It's cheaper and you won't notice any difference :thumb:

I don't use that type of keg so can't help with the tap but you will need to add c02 when the pressure drops as you poor beer. If you don't add gas eventually the tap will 'glug' some air in which will oxidise your beer :sick:
 
Well, it's been in since New years day, got a ring going on, so fingers crossed,temp is around 20. Might add teaspoon of treacle and sugar to the king keg to add a little extra, thoughts?
