Right, so I brewed a Pumpkin Ale yesterday. I hit the expected pre-boil gravity was 1047, I hit 1044 (Corrected for temp using the forum calculator. Was 1030 @ 58C. My hydro is calibrated for 20C). Not a huge difference so I wasn't too worried.
The post-boil OG was meant to be 1057 and somehow mine is still 1044?! I don't understand how this could be.
The only thing that I can think of to explain this is that when I tested the pre-boil gravity, it wasn't ALL of the wort in the container, just most of it. The boiler couldn't hold the entire bit of wort and still safely boil, so I was adding the runnings that were left as the boil progressed. So maybe the pre-boil gravity would have been even lower once the entirety of the wort was added. Now, I've done this method before with no issues when I was doing BIAB in a smaller boiler.
I also ended up with a lot more wort than expected. Do you think this could all stem from a boil that wasn't rigorous enough? I had a SMALL boil over at one point and so I switched off the second element.
I'm stumped. I re checked the OG like 4 times to make sure I wasn't crazy, but sadly i didn't have the ability to re check the pre-boil.
All in all, the brewday was a bit of a disaster, but in the end I came out with more than an FV full of wort at 1044 which should ferment down to a decent ABV so I guess I can't complain TOO much
Any thoughts from the gurus?
