hi all, having recently moved onto all-grain, I've decided that I need a more accurate thermometer than the cheap glass one I've been using until now... in an ideal world I'd pick up a waterproof Hanna one with separate probe so I could monitor my mash without opening the boiler (I practice BIAB) but don't really have £150 to spend. I've seen the Hanna 'CheckTemp' one piece probe thermometer on eBay for £18 second hand, or a tenner more shipped from Germany... would this be suitable, or should it really be waterproof? And are there other more affordable makes I should be looking for? Thanks in advance :)
 
I use thermometers that are fitted into my boiler from Home Brew Builder (also forum member) Mark is excellent, communicates well and doesn't charge a lot. £20 for a SS thermometer and thermowell. You can view his site HERE.

I have the same one as PD and a Comark DT400 Waterproof Thermometer. The main reason for getting the comark was it is reportedly very accurate, it is field calibratable (I can do it at home) and it is waterproof so no worries if I drop it in. Both of these thermometers read very close, within 0.3°c of each other. :thumb:

Looks like three votes for the ETI one then... & it's substantially cheaper than I'd feared :thumb:

LeithR, if I make the switch from my Buffalo electric boiler to gas at some point in the future, I may well get a thermometer fitted - but I think hand held is the way to go for me for now :)

I use stc for temp controls on the hlt. The ETi is just a roaming thermometer for me
 
I'm planning on a dial thermometer in the mash tun as well and just using the eti for yeast rehydrating grain temp etc.
 
Great, thanks once again for all the info... the STC1000s sound interesting, but I'm only two AG batches in... I'll see how more accurate temp readings improve things before I go spending any more cash :D
 
There brilliant, I have 2 controlling fridges and a portable one for hlt, boiler or brewshed heating and will be getting another 2 to control 2 more fridges soon.
