Can someone please help settle a disagreement i'm having with a friend.
He drives a small peugeot van and has recently bought a trailer i think the max laden weight of it is less than 1500kg, he is only 21 so only been driving for 4 years.
I'm convinced that they changed the law regarding towing trailers and that he has to pass an extra test and he claims that as long as its under 1500kg he can drive it on a standard license
Any ideas???

He can up to 3500kg from the age of 17.

1500kg + 750kg = 2250KG

See section B on a driving licenses

I am afraid your friends is right

As long as the combined weight of the trailer and van are below 3500Kg then its fine.
Also the trailer fully loaded must not weigh more than the unloaded weight of the van.
These were the new rules brought in for people passing tests after Jan 1997.

I only past my driving test in 2002 when I was at the ripe old age of 32. My understanding is that I am not allowed to pull a trailer, no matter what weight until I pass the standard trailer test. If anybody has any definite answer to say that I can then its happy birthday for me.

At least I don't have to worry about getting pulled now

This list shows what you can drive and tow based on the categories on your license.

My son, who passed his test about 3 years ago has category B, which means he can tow a small trailer, but he can't tow a trailer that falls in the B+E category.

Your licence will show you what categories you are entitled to drive and tow.

Thanks for all the replies people, looks like i was wrong then
I'll tell him later i'm sure he'll take great pleasure in being proved right
