Hi all,

A quick question to put out there,
I was speaking to a friend of mine and he says homebrewers tend to drink too many times a week.

My experience I normally drink 4 nights a week and each night is about 8 - 10 pints.

does anybody else think this is unreasonable.

Cheers

I don't understand your use of the word "unreasonable". Can you explain what you actually mean by it, please?

Also, I am unsure of the strength of the beer you are referring to.

On first sight, it may be unwise.

But of course, you could be the 20+ stone Shirley Crabtree who was better known as "Big Daddy" in the wrestling ring.

I think 40 pints a week is excessive but I doubt it's got much to do with brewing.

Incidentally, since I started brewing I think I drink less than I did before.

I have a about 3 pints on a Friday and less on a Saturday because I cycle on a Sunday morning. If I didn't brew I would drink less because it would cost more

basically I think he was trying to say that because I have a lot of homebrew easily accessible I am tempted to drink it on all my nights off.

The strength of the beer is miniumum 5% to 8%.

Your right. The fact it's so accessable can lead to drinking too much of it. I'm as guilty as anyone. I've recently tried to cut it down to just 2-3 nights per week of about 1L -1.5L per night. I mostly make my beers around 4%.

Tbh If I drank 40 pints a week of 5%-8% beer I'd be worried about my health

When its all sitting there and you can hear it calling to you, drink me,drink me its bloody hard to resist.I think in the last week I've supped 25 pints maybe but console myself with the fact that its no less than 94% water so can't be that bad for me,just my figure and who cares about that at my age not that I have an overly large bay window gut

I tend to sup 3-5 pts at a time. Probably 3-4 days a week. So between 9-20 pts a week. So yeah, for me, 40 pts would be excessive

although you say this is excessive are you drinking stronger ales or are you drinking session beers at about 4%.

I mean on a night out in a pub the first 2 beers normally go down with in about 40 mins so that would only leave me about 3 pints for the rest of the night.

got a REAL heavy day on it tomorrow as im off with my real ale group for a jolly up to the annual hydes beer studio visit, must be 14 years on the trot now and reckon itll be well into double figures by the time I get home late evening:lol:its gotta be done:thumb:

4 times a week, 8 pints ( I'll scale it down to 500ml, rather than 568ml which is a pint) a night at 5%, so the minimum you said, is 80 units of alcohol a week or about 4 times the recommended maximum. If you go to your top end of a 10 full pints, 4 times a week at 8% ABV thats a whopping over 181 units per week.

As someone who in my younger days drank 100 units a week regularly I can say excessive alcohol consumption causes a lot of physical and mental problems that will stay with you for life. Cut down while you can. There have been a few posts on here asking what people drink and you are probably right at the top of the list, I still havent seen anyone who drinks less than me at about 4 pints a week although recently I've been having 6-8 some weeks. This week, 5 pints.

If you were really drinking anywhere near the top end of what you claim I reckon you would be dead within a year. I used to get all sort so problems including waking up with my whole left side (face to feet) completely numb after a heavy session and had to use my right hand to shake my left hand to start getting feeling back in it, then have to slide myself off the bed and move around to get feeling back in the rest of my left side. Had to leave my job before I would have been sacked.

In case you dont know, to work out the units, one unit is 10ml of alcohol. You times the volume of the drink by the ABV to the alcohol in ml and divide by 10 for the units, so a 500ml bottle at 5% ABV is 500ml X 5%= 25ml, 25/10 is 2.5 units. So for you minimum of 8 bottles is 8 X 2.5 = 20 units a night.

The max is 568ml X 8% = 45.44ml. 45.44/10 is 4.544 units. 10 pints is 45.44 units and 4 times a week is 181.76 units, or to put it another way, dead man walking (or should that be drinking).

as with lots of things folk differ with tolerance of what feeds their habits, take smoking some folk get killed off by the **** early and some indulge right up into old age.I know one thing and that is if you lead a saintly life you will die of boredom for sure.I wanna get up to them pearly gates with ST Peter saying youre long overdue:thumb:

I'm guilty (or not) of drinking every night. I make a brew which turns out at about 4%abv which is my go to beer. some nights I might have 1 pint, others 2, others 5 or 6. I know that i drink too much but I dont smoke or do any thing else, i often work my balls of 6 days a week and by god i need a beer some nights. I will add that i drink plenty of water through out the day.

180 units a week will get you in the end, whether it's your liver crapping out, choking on your own vomit or falling. Not to mention if you're drinking like that and you drive there will almost certainly be times where you're driving while over the limit.

been drinking the amber nectar quite regular now for over 45 years and last month had a liver blood test.....routine....and came up clear.i will say though its about diet as well,i eat very little meat(yup a bag of scratchins a week) and loads and loads of fruit and dark greens and walk about 15/20 miles a week.imo its about loads of things including your genes and yes I count myself up to yet as one of the lucky ones.but I think I partly made my own luck:grin:

Went through a period in my early thirties when I would have drank similar amounts, but more like 4-5% beers. It's pretty serious drinking and at the time I was comfortable with it, but it catches up with you and the older you get the more I find it effects you. Nowadays I probably drink about 6-8 pints a week, however when I am on holiday I will drink a lot more.
