Having just sampled a bottle os Marston's Double Drop and being very impressed with what i tasted, i was wondering if anyone could explane to me, the process of DOUBLE DROP FENENTATION.

Cheers CB

great find MD its something thats been buggin me for ages, think its Robinsons [stockport brewery] did a double drop ale i had a few year back on handpump always wondered what it was ,but thats a bit of a long read thru for this time of night [and severeral vessels sunk] :drunk:

So the point of the double drop is to clear the wort/beer of yeast and other flocculants?

How to do this without aerating the brew though? Or does that not matter at this stage of things?

Excellent aticle.. so questions:
Has anyone else tried double-dropping? A little extra work (without the skimming), time sensitive and requiring an additional fv. And..
Does anyone skim the krausen off the top? I've seen many arguments for skimming and not skimming, but nothing which seems to be definite.

Tar!

It would appear, without knowing the process had a name, that I've been doing something sililar for years.
As soon as the yeast head forms with all the crud on top I rack off into a second FV leaving the rubbish behind.
A new head forms in a couple of hours and I leave it to ferment until the head begins clearing.
At this stage I transfer to a secondary fermenter where it remains until bottling/kegging.
(Suppose this could be called triple dropping!)
I believe "Wheeler and Prost" refered to it in their book.

I always did it this way, however I have switched to fermenting in one vessel to see if there is a difference.

Only differences so far:
The FVs are easier to clean if you use two. They overspill yeast isn't so dried on.
And the fermentation is about 12-24hrs quicker if only one FV is used.
:hmm:

Most say moving brew to new FV adds risk of infection. I drop a third time when FG is reached so I can harvest yeast. I just take care that all is clean and I do not expose to air needlessly.

I'll report on taste difference when I find any. :|
