BBC article How Australian is Foster's Lager this morning reminded me of something that disgruntled me even more recently.

I'll be careful how I phrase all this, but I was disappointed to find out that the Ampleforth Abbey Beer listed under 'Monastic Produce' on their own website appeared (at the time at least) to be brewed at Hebden Bridge's Little Valley Brewery. Well, maybe the monks go out to the brewery and give the mash a stir - I don't know - but I think I'm entitled to feel uneasy about the whole thing.

[In the end, despite an article(by someone with a dubious grasp of the dubbel style) suggesting Rochefort yeast might be involved, I found the beer rather disappointing and it was extremely slow to clear after being manhandled home from Tesco.]

indeed. I did wonder about their tie with Little Valley. About 6 months ago the dray man got a few free bottles of Ampleforth Abbey for taking back some empty casks.

The industry in general gets rather lax with branding and purposefully miss directing information about ingredients.

Fosters is a funny story, founded by tow American brothers in Australia who sold the brand the following year. Ah well its made in Manchester at the moment IIFC.
