hi guys just started my first brew.started on boxing day with a youngs ( im sure ) starter lager kit, done as instructed on the wee box.Only using 1KG of granulated sugar.I really dont know if this link will work so bare with me,ive looked at a few pics around the forum and no 2 of the initial froth on the top..as far as i know ( its brewing at the mothers house ) it is still bubbling.any advice on when i should move on to bottling,i was thinking on leaving it another week just to be sure.can this cause any damage to the brew?

as i said ill post this link a few times,it is from facebook as its the only place i have the pic ATM!
r

cheers for the time lads!

just tried 2 upload URLS but as a new user it looked 2 spammy which i understand,i will try to give as best a verbal discription as possible!

id say around 40% is actual bubbles/froth not too thick around 2/3mm in places, also looks as if the actual volume of the brew has dropped as there is some residue of some sort around an inch high around the diamater of the bucket, cannot comment on texture as this is first brew and i am no where near the brew itself. ( oh and apparently it reeks,so says my mother and sister. ) i had depressed the lid on the bucket, saw someone else said they do it on the forum here.it has domed back up ( as expected ) but seems the lid is not as tight as would probably be liked as the lid came off pretty easy!

i will return to this topic probably tomorrow with a serious hangover and an actual pic!

again thanks for the time lads and i apoligize for the lack of pics

happy new year also lads!

I like to follow the ten day method.

Let it ferment at 18-20c for 10 days.
Bottle and prime and keep for another 10 days at 18-20c
Cool for 10 days at 3-10c (usually in the shed for me)
Then drink 10 for quality control purpose :D

Dont Panic. Best answer on here will be "Its probably fine, just leave it alone for another week".

The ring of material attached to the side of the FV is normal.

My only question is about the volume , you say its dropped back a fair bit. Are you sure you put the correct amount of liquid in at the beginning?

It won't have lost volume. The ring around your FV is where the yeast foam got to. It's pretty sticky stuff and sticks to the side of the FV. I am sure it is fine and if there are bubbles on the surface it is still fermenting. Relax and enjoy New Years Eve. The second rule of Home brew is Don't Worry.

to be honest Rwilts i dont really know as im not at the brew atm.i put just above 25L in as i thouht i would lose a litre or maybe...again this is my first brew...someone suggested i should put another 200/300 grammes of sugar in? is this advisable?

I was thinking that you 'may' have taken the top of your froth to be the liquid volume? When that subsided you would have a fair bit less in your bucket.

When filling up make sure that your volume is accurate and remember to include any water you used to disolve the sugar and rinse out the tin kit in your total :thumb:

i may have Rwilts...was kinda excited to get started..i will prime and bottle on the 10day mark, cannot wait 2 get the first batch out and another in,and advice on using fruits for extra fermentation/flavours? ive heard freezing the fruit before hand is best practice

I wouldn't do this. Just leave it another week then bottle!

No need to add more sugar, however, adding more will do no harm whatsoever. It will simply increase the ABV (marginally) but.....it will also increase the fermentation time. Give it time and use your hydrometer. Equally, just wait until your lid is no longer domed, don't keep opening it. If there is no longer any fermentation the lid will no longer be pushed up. Giving it an extra week or so in the FV won't do any harm.
