I have been having problems viewing the video on the BBC news site for several days, it kept buffering every few seconds or i got the message that it was not available at that time, i tried other browsers and it made no difference, tonight i changed my DNS server settings to open DNS and it seems to have improved, does anyone here know if changing it can help or has it just been a coincidence ?

Yep, it's possible, if your ISP's DNS is getting choked. It's also possible switching DNS is giving packets a less congested route (you could try running tracert to see)

Anyway, it worked :)

Set your DNS to 8.8.8.8, like my wife, google never goes down

There is a DNS test called DNS bench which will show you the best performing server for your connection.

I am with talk talk so would not be surprised if their DNS servers are playing up again, it wouldn't be the first time.

I don't think changing your DNS should make any difference to video buffering. Once your PC knows the IP address for a domain, it doesn't need to talk to the DNS server any more.

I use ccleaner before I shut down at the end of the day, would this cause the pc to look for it every time I visit ?
I have tested with my isp DNS again after it worked with opendns and it was rubbish again, switching back to opendns sorted it again.

Doesn't that depend on DNS cache time though?
