This may sound crazy, but just in the interests of exhausting all possibilities, you're not on any medication are you? I had a strong antibiotic (or to be pedantic, an antibacterial) once - everything I ate or drank tasted fine except for beer! And possibly other drugs might have similar effects...

With all this talk about "burning" the wort I had a think and decided that the reason it doesn't happen to me is that:
  1. I use a "Paella Cooker" gas ring that has an inner and outer ring so that the heat is evenly dispersed.
  2. I stir the wort quite regularly until it boils in order to decrease the time it takes to get to the boil.
  3. My taste-buds are so knackered that I can't taste the "burnt" flavour.
Just a thought, but maybe keeping the wort moving until it starts to boil will stop the "burnt" flavour from occurring.:thumb:

I use induction and i have still had burnt beers. I have a 32l ss pot which is so thin when i accidental turned the heat on with an empty pot it immediately buckled and i had to hammer it flat again. The tea urn boilers are all thin as well. Its very easy to scorch the bottom especially if you have a lot of gunk in your wort. This is why my next purchase will be a high quality pot.

Something like this, but then bigger? http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kochtopf-mit...UKTION-5-Größen/231904901401?var=531367140354

Not only a man after my own heart for economy but an optimist as well!

Your proposal for your “next purchase” will almost certainly be greeted by SWMBO with derision, a really long list of “necessary” household expenditures that are much more important and the reminder “You already have one and who buckled it?”

Reminds me of the other day. I'd loaded my basket on Brew Builder with everything I need for a recirculation pump setup (including pump), then an email arrived from eBay with a money off code for Appliances Online... My wife wasn't even in, but like a well trained hubby I toddled off and bought a new tumble drier to replace our old and broken one...

I consoled myself by ordering a cheap stir plate and a couple of Erlenmeyer flasks.... :laugh2:

But then it was on offer, and obviously cost 50% less than it actually did

For what it's worth, the SS Brewtech kettles are great. I use it on an induction hob, and have never had scorching. I only transfer clear wort into it though, no grain bits/dust etc.

It has a fairly heavy bottom (just like the Mrs)

I found a small batch of beer in the garage last night brewed on the stove from spare runnings last year. Had one sip and spat it out. Was as smokey and disgusting as you can imagine. Shame as it looked great.

At this time of day anything but Stout from March last year tastes foul: but the Stout tastes great!

Bo Peep time perhaps? :thumb:

I just paid 77 quid online for a 20l stainless steel stock pot, without lid. Think I've been mugged there. It had better be bloody good!!
