Hello all I think I have been some what lazy in my sterilizing of late sadly I have just had to chuck 25 liters of London pride down my sink. now iv noticed when cleaning my barrel there's a nice brown ring round the inside I'm assuming it's from secondy fermntaion and I'm having a hell of a time trying to shift it. What's the best thing to shift the muck and get the barrel clean again.

You could either reach in with a washing up brush, I know a tight squeeze, or use a pressure washer, they will shift just about anything and a few things they shouldn't as well.

Think il pass on the pressure washer I can see my self putting deap scratches on the inside of the barrel. Bleach sounds like a far safer idea have to pick up some and give it a go

Thanks for the help

I always mix up a super-strength batch of VWP for really stubborn stains, works for me.

Are you sure that the spoiled batch is due to the stain though ... stains don't necessarily hold bacteria/nasties. I've seen brewday pics from lots of people using heavily stained equipment.

Good luck!

If it is a ring of yeast make up a Hot (70C+) strong solution of washing soda (25g in 1L) . . . pour it into the keg, and add a microfibre cleaning cloth. . . . Shake and swirl the solution around the barrel . . . it will come clean in short order . . . then simply rinse and disinfect as normal

We pay a lot of attention to everything being ultra clean :?

Must admit I was very surprised a few years ago when I used to visit a couple of breweries, I was expecting squeaky clean, how wrong :!:

they seemed to just spray down with water and then on to the next batch :hmm: no stainless steel for them, everything was wooden and very ancient :!:

unfortunately one closed down in 1991 & other in 1999 :(

Let it stand with the bleach solution for at least 24 hrs.

I'm not to sure if it is just from the barrel but every thing will be getting a bloody good clean to be on the safe side I don't want to be chucking any more beer away.
