Hi
Can anyone tell me the difference please between 60L, 80L, 120L etc as I have bought crystal malt from 2 different suppliers previously and both bags just have the description as crystal malt.

It's a colour difference, in the US they have more varieties available where we have light crystal, crystal and dark crystal. I believe light is usually ~30L, normal ~60-80L and dark ~120L but may be wrong.

Cheers rich, it makes perfect sense now you say that. :thumb: :thumb:

I am looking at making a pilsner type lager and will be interested to see how the colour looks in the recipe calculator

But then you have the German Crystal Malts like carapils at about 10L

If you are making a pilsner type beer stay away from the UK crystal malts and go for something like carapils.

Incidentally I have seen an extra dark crystal at around 400 EBC

Thanks AM. Is cara used to maintain a low SRM in preference to Crystal ? :wha:

I tried 2 of my local home brew suppliers today and neither had any.

As well as a lower colour contribution the flavour profile is a lot different too, where crystal malt adds a caramel/toffee flavour the carapils adds a moresubtle maltier flavour.
