I've got a recipe for an IPA which calls for Crystal malt 40 Lovibond which I think is about 78EBC?

Anyway I'm in the process of seeing how much all the ingredients will cost me on Get'er Brewed and I'm not sure what to select as the crystal malt. There's Crisp Light Crystal but that has an EBC of 145-165 which I wasn't sure if it was too dark? It makes up less than 3% of the grain bill so would this matter?

Any suggestions on what the best malt option to select would be appreciated.

Light crystal is usually less than 100 EBC. I think I’ve got a bag that’s 60 EBC.

I wouldn’t worry too much, just plum it into a recipe calculator and add just enough to get the desired colour your recipe states. Although at 3% of the grist, I wouldn’t worry too much. You’ll make a good beer it will just be a little darker/sweeter.

According to Weyermann, Type 1 is between 30.6 and 38.2 L. Type 2 is 41.9 and 49.5L. If you had the exact specs of the 40L Crystal, you could match the amounts of both. Or just split the amounts between the two CaraMunichs

You probably want CaraAmber if going for a Weyermann malt as it comes in at 70 EBC-ish. From my calcs CaraMunich I is 90 EBC, II is 120 and III is 150. I've used CaraAmber a few times but in a bled with other malts, beers have been good.

Crisp is weird, their crystals are a grade darker than others so their light/med/dark would be equivalent to med/dark/extra dark for everyone else.

Thomas Fawcett Pale Crystal @ 60EBC.
Simpsons Crystal Light @ 100EBC.
Crisp? They seem to skip from 30EBC to 150EBC.
UK malts available from Malt Miller. (EDIT: Crisp appear to do a 100EBC crystal but only sell it in mainland Europe?).

You don't wont any of that European muck cause it will bring "barley die back" disease into the UK which will whither your manhood and cause "Brexit" to go on for another 10 years. Honest  (What was that … I'm not honest? You can shut-up too! I can show everyone my "honesty" certificate I got off eBay for fifty quid).
