Finally got sick of budget barrels and associated beer puddles and mid-maturation tap transplant surgery.

So which capper to get? An 'Emily' type hand held one for about £14 or a bench-top one for about twice that price?

Also, I found in the local pound shop a couple of ten litre 'water carriers' which look a lot like poly-pins. Heres the thing though, if theres any residual fermentation going on, wont these asplode? And how would I stop this from happening?

While I keg and bottle, your problems seem to stem from the quality of the keg rather than the system. I would go for a better system such as a Corny. As for the capper I would get whichever suits your budget. They both work well. But you get what you pay for as with most things.

I use polypins, 20lt size, and yes they can expand but you just need to keep an I on it. I let it condition with the tap upwards. If it looks like a football it's time to vent.

I bottle all my brew don't use anything else, I use a bench capper and it's brilliant, its easy, efficient and does a good job without any problems :thumb:

Take a look on eBay for a good quality kegs ;)

I've picked up 6 so far, not paid more than £30 delivered for any of them, all either Hambledon Bard or Rotokeg, mostly top tap with floats in them and all with S30 valves on them.

I've only had to replace the S30 seals on one of them, a new seal kit cost me a couple of quid delivered.

I like bottled beer, but for me it's a faff, so I only bottle a few out of each batch and keg the rest.
