Hi, anyone got experience with cross my loof ale yeast? It took my brew from 1059 to 1007 in 3 days and stinks like a cheesy fart 😅🤢

Its day 4 now, so I'm hoping this will dissipate in a week or 10 days.

Which one of their yeasts was it? They do about 20 different ones

A sulphur/rotten eggs smell isn’t uncommon for some ale yeasts and will have settled by the time you come to bottle.

Thanks for reply. It just says Ale yeast on the packet. The brewday went well, the wort was chilled quickly and aerated and i sprinkled two packs of 10g (20g total) into around 19 litres of wort. 1059 OG. Wort temp was about 21 at first, but my brew fridge is set to 18°c so it would've slowly come down to the fridge temp within a few hours.

I think activity started within 12 hours judging by my Tilt hydrometer. It then kicked into hyperdrive for 3 days and now its settled out. Impressive yeast action, but damn it stinks. So you start worrying 😄

I have 3 packs of it here and I’ve used the Belgian yeast lately with great results.
why did you use 2 packs ? It says 1 pack is sufficient for 19l ? Not questioning your methods just curious.

Belts and braces i guess plus its a cheap yeast so didnt mind. Slightly overpitching wont hurt, yet underpitching might i figured!

2 packs is too much in reality when fermented at normal temps. That is probably why it has fermented at the speed it has, by the way was it the Real ale yeast you used and with fast ferments you can get a sulphurous smell especially with lager yeasts

Well a yeast pitch calculater online says i didnt pitch enough 🤣 brewing is confusing!

It depends on who has written the calculator as and I am only saying maybe it may have been written by somebody who has a vested interest in selling yeast. That I do not know but you will get better advice on here than using that specific calculator and I am sure the yeast manufacturer/distributor will have said that 1 pack is enough.
Its all part of the brewing learning curve we have all fallen foul at sometime as most aspects of brewing have more than one answerathumb..

Thanks for your help guys. You're probably right. Just doing another calculator and it says i needed 283 billion viable yeast cells.

X1 10g pack of their ale yeast has 200 billion viable yeast cells. So rather than 2 packs maybe 1.5 would've been better?

1 is enough that pack will ferment 23ltrs as long as you are in the ferment temps, only use more if fermenting at lower than the temp range

I guess the main thing now is if this smell dies down and i get a decent beer at the end. That's all a guy can hope for 😅
