I had my first bash at a very simple all grain kit this weekend, having previously only made kits and modified kits to great success (including gluten free varieties).
I decided to do the craftybrews 'stove topper' kit - essentially a kilo of grains, some hops and yeast, all prepared on top of the hob. The only modification I made was to throw in some Irish Moss at the end of the boil.
The beer is now in a 5 litre demijohn fermenting away, yet there is a substantial amount of thick lumpy sediment on the top... Would anybody be able to let me know if this looks healthy and is normal? and also a method for syphoning off the beer into bottles when the time comes, without dredging up a load of sediment?
I'll attach a picture (taken 24 hours after introducing the yeast). The blue thing its sat on is a heat map and the wire is connected up to a digital thermometer.
