Has any one got any experience with the above. Just started to strip mine down, after loosing 4th, jumping out of second on the down shift and crunching into 3rd, reverse was a bit awkward too. This was a steady degeneration.

Anyway when we removed the tail housing, and top cover, we were amazed at how clean and very little sign of wear there was inside, nothing looked wrong. Syncro rings, gears all no signs of wear, no sign of swarfe in the bottom of the box. Just a small amount wear on the ceramic selector fork pads. So we started to break down the box. After removing the input shaft we found the thrust bearing in bits! :(

The box does show signs of previous work, the pins in the selector rods have been removed, you can see hammer marks. I am wondering if the box has had quite a recent rebuild and the bearing was faulty or badly fitted.

Now, do I go through the heart ache of stripping the whole box and buying a full overhaul kit, and risking not finding anything else, or just replace the selector pads and the bearing? :wha: The box was a total b*stard to get out of the car, so probably will be to get back in!

I have never stripped a gearbox down before btw

Well the answer is hard one to work out!
If you have the funds full rebuild.
I take it your keeping the vehicle for a while, also you'll hopefully be pushing some power through it. You'll curse if you short build it to find something else in a month! Also do it cos if it has been rebuilt recently and the bearing was badly fitted or faulty what else is wrong with it????
So personally I'd shell out and rebuild it fully so I know everything is done right and not going to give me any more hassle for the next year or two.

To rebuild is the way I am leaning. Just not looking forward to getting it all back together, in the right order!

Yeah don't envy you on that one, make notes and take photo's along the way, every little helps. If you get it really wrong you'll have 5 reverse gears and 1 forward

I could always mount seats backwards, no windscreen so I suppose I doesn't make much difference!
