I bought a coopers kit a while back but didn't use the yeast that came with it as I read somewhere that they don't use the same yeast in their kits as they do in their beer. I recently decided to do a full grain brew and realised that the only yeast I had around was the coopers and a muntons so went with the coopers. I just drank a bottle after only 10 days and I'm now almost convinced that it is the same yeast as in their bottled beer. My beer has the same fruity taste as you find in their coopers sparkling ale which is possibility my favourite beer. So does anyone know? Is the yeast in their kits the same as their bottled beer?

I think it has been bred to give as close as possible a result to the commercial version - but that isn't to say it's the same yeast.

Coopers recommend culturing up the yeast out of their bottled beer for the true yeast, but it's a bugger to get hold of over here, unless you fancy buying it by the case of 12 at £40 inc delivery!!

Certainly it had the same fruity taste.

You can get Coopers in quite a lot of places here in Edinburgh. Most specialist beer shops stock it and if I remember correctly they stock it in Waitrose.

As for harvesting it from the bottle I did that year or so ago and it is the only batch of beer that I have had to chuck out. It started out good I had what I thought was a good starter, it smelled good, the brew went good for the first few days then suddenly I got a funky smell. When I opened the fermenter up it had a horrible chemical smell and I just decided to chuck it out. I might try it again sometime being very careful to keep things clean
