Anyone tried this kit recently? Iv'e just received this as a present and reading the reviews it doesn't seem to get the best review. Any ideas on the taste? I really like Dark Ales, Hobgoblin, Old Peculiar, Porters and Stouts etc.

Anyway i'm planning to start this tonight using:

The kit can
1kg Dark Spray Malt
Probably 200g unrefined golden cane sugar or maybe about 200g golden treacle (what's leftover from other brews)
Brewed short to 21L
Fermented at 19c

I'm looking for something around 4.5%
And its being kegged

Any views on this Chaps?

:?

I also like dark ales like old peculiar and hob goblin but having brewed this kit with 1kg of dme I wouldn't do it again.
It bears no resemblance to the above ales and tastes more like dandelion and burdock.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you want a real dark ale try woodfords nog

Of course, the problem I have is "Iv'e got it!" !

I'm still going to brew it but I would like to know if anyone has any tips on how to improve it (or not)

Woodfordes nog? Hmm might try that one. Did you just use the kit or did you change it at all?

Cheers

Not recently as such, but it is the only kit beer I ever brewed more than once. I really liked it

What did you like about it?

What did you use?
Sorry mate I cant remember exactly it was back in 2009 when I was doing kits, I just remember really liking it. I don't recall it tasting like dandelion and burdoch? Maybe they changed the recipe? As for what I put in it, I have a feeling it was sugar the first time and dark DME the second.

I've got a Coopers Dark on at the moment, aiming to make it more Hobgoblin-like by a generous addition of Styrian Goldings and Fuggles (boiled, steeped and dry hopped). It should be ready to go into the secondary FV this weekend, then a week or so to clear before bottling...and first taste of course, we'll see how it turns out.

No worries, thanks all the same
