I have been brewing bitter, mild and heavy kits for around a year but had steered clear of Lager as all I read about it talked about bottom instead of top yeast and the need for low temperatures. Since winter I thought I would try a Lager kit while the temperatures are low however on buying the kit the instructions are the same as with all the other beers 18 - 24 deg C in fermentor and week in house once bottled then store in cool place.

So why is there all this about using a fridge for Lager there is nothing in instructions that say must be cooled?

Sounds like you have bought a "lager" kit that is supplied with an ale yeast - which kit exactly is it? Only a few of the lager kits actually use a lager yeast that ferments at a low temp rather than the usual 18-24C for ale yeasts.
